Chapter Eleven
Rain pelted against her face as she ran toward the bakery. There had been no mention of rain in the forecast, but then again, it was early fall and cold rains were the expected norm around Love.
She loved the rain in the spring, but disliked it in the fall. Fall was a time for bonfires and social gatherings with picnics and extra baking opportunities with family and friends for the fall festival. There was no need for the cold rain.
Nearing the bakery within a minuteâs time, she was surprised to see an object hunched over near the door, partially covered from the weather by the awning but still getting pelted by the raindrops and wind. She wondered if it was a child or possibly a homeless person, but wouldnât they have walked into the bakery out of the rain?
Only when she got closer to the object, she realized it wasnât a human at all. In fact, it was a soaked ball of fur that cried out as soon as she knelt down to pick it up. Matted fur clung to its face as she carried it haphazardly into the bakery. From what she could see, it had floppy ears, a cold nose, and very sad eyes.
As if sensing the confusion on what this was in Sadieâs arms, the object let out a woof followed by an over-exaggerated whine as it yawned. Sadie held the dog at armâs length on the way to the kitchen. She called out for Mae and was relieved to find her in the back. âWeâve got a situation,â Sadie explained. âIt was just sitting out there in the rain, freezing to death.â
âAww, poor thing. Bring it over to the sink,â Mae said, motioning for Sadie to hurry to the oversized sink as she set the temp of the water. âI think we have enough Dawn dish soap to clean it.â
âDawn? You can use that on animals? Is it safe?â Panic filled Sadieâs voice, but she honestly had no clue on how to take care of an animal, let alone bathe them.
âDonât you remember quite a few years ago when the oil rig leaked into the ocean and they had to save millions of animals drenched in oil?â Mae asked, already taking care to scrub the dog clean while the water filled the sink. âThey used Dawn like it was a necessity. I only remember because of the Dawn commercials on TV.â
Sadie thought about the time she had seen those commercials and agreed with Mae. The soap was safe enough for the ocean life, it would be safe enough for this pup. She walked over to the sink and helped hold the dog still for Mae as she took her time scrubbing every inch of the matted fur. She used the softest voice she could muster, telling the dog it would be okay. It was safe now. They would take care of it.
âWhat are we going to do with the dog after its bath?â Mae asked, raising a brow at Sadie.
